The Quiet City began as a sketchbook where imaginative drawings evolved alongside my street photography practice. As the pages developed, a haunting noir-inspired world emerged. The scenes unfold in shadowy encounters and unspoken transactions, where power shifts hands through glances and gestures, and the city's darker self plays out in back alleys and abandoned factories; where questions aren't asked and loyalties are tested.
The distinctive atmosphere—with its long shadows and empty streets—reflects a dialogue with Giorgio de Chirico, whose paintings have inspired my work for decades. The narrative structure also draws from Frans Masereel's wordless graphic novels, inviting viewers to construct and reconstruct their own stories.

In response to the Quiet City, I've created a suite of 11 x 14 in. paintings that can be viewed in the "RELATED GOAUCHES" page.
